PRC-Tagung in Paris, 3. Mai 2014.

Neues vom Iran-Deal

von Thomas von der Osten-Sacken

Vier Meldungen von heute:

Die erste:

Brig.-Gen. Hossein Salami, the second-in-command of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), said Saturday: “Not only will we not grant foreigners the permission to inspect our military sites, we will not even give them permission to think about such a subject….They will not even be permitted to inspect the most normal military site in their dreams….Visiting a military base by a foreign inspector would mean the occupation of our land because all our defense secrets are there. Even talking about the subject means national humiliation.”

Die zweite:

Thousands of Iranians celebrated their nation’s annual Army Day on Saturday with a full military parade. A military truck in the convoy displayed a large banner that read, “Death to Israel,” while hundreds of parade attendees chanted, “death to Israel” and death to America.”

Saturday’s event occurred amid ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Western powers, led by the United States. The West is seeking independent regulation of the nation’s nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of certain economic sanctions.  Last week, Rouhani and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei derided the United States and claimed any deal would require the immediate removal of the sanctions – some of which are forcing Iran to keep millions of barrels of crude oil in storage. But the United States wants to go the phase-out route – lifting the sanctions only once independent inspectors verify that Tehran is living up to its end of the deal.

Die dritte:

After Iran’s “nuclear talks,” and after it was comfortably removed as a terrorism threat from the “Worldwide Threat Assessment of the US Intelligence Communities,” the International Committee Against Executions (ICAE) reported approximately 55 executions in fewer than three weeks across Iran.

According to Mina Ahadi, Founder of ICAE, various prisoners or their families had contacted her office weeks before the killings. Prison authorities, they said, had told the prisoners that they had received orders from “above” to “cleanse” a large of number of the prisoners rapidly after the P5+1 talks. The vast majority of these prisoners had been sentenced to death for non-lethal offences in trials that, according to activists, often fell dramatically short of international standards.

Die vierte:

In the midst of the nuclear talks on a final agreement between Iran and the P5+1, Iran will host the Second International Holocaust Cartoon Contest on May 9.

Iran has already made clear during the talks that, apart from the nuclear issue, it has no intention of discussing any other item on its Islamic revolutionary agenda. Hence, Iran will cling to its defiant stance on Holocaust denial, especially now that the West, led by the United States, appears wobbly in the negotiations. The first exhibition, held in 2006, centered on Holocaust denial, which was a main theme of the eight-year presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Warten auf das nächste Ghouta

von Thomas von der Osten-Sacken

Waiting for the Second Ghouta Attack“.

We haven’t encountered a ruling regime in the modern era that affronted the Security Council and International Humanitarian Law as the Syrian regime has done and on high levels of arrogance and impudence, specifically in the use of poisoned gas, as the colleagues in the OPCW fact-finding mission in Syria proved government forces use of poisoned chlorine gas, and this -to large extent- matches what we have pointed out, however the Security Council didn’t act.

Bnesh city shelling, Tuesday, March 24, 2015:

Government aviation dropped two barrel bombs loaded with chlorine gas injuring at least 17 individuals, including women and children.

Srmin city shelling, Thursday, March 26,2015:

Government aviation dropped a barrel bomb loaded with chlorine gas injuring about 8 individuals.

Idlib city shelling, Tuesday, March 31, 2015:

Government aviation dropped two barrel bombs loaded with chlorine gas on the security block area injuring 13 individuals mostly light injuries.

A top Syrian diplomat says Damascus will continue to provide Kurdish fighters in Syrian Kurdistan with military and financial support.
Syrian reconciliation minister Ali Haidar told Rudaw he conducted “constructive talks” with Kurdish officials on a recent visit to Syrian Kurdistan, or Rojava, where he met with local officials.
“We have been providing all possible military assistance for the Kurdish forces in order to empower them against terror,” Haidar said. “We are still providing them with our support in order to defeat the terrorist organizations,” he added.
The Kurdish Democratic Unity Party (PYD) declared autonomy in the three regional cantons of Rojava last year. It has been locked in fierce fighting with the so-called Islamic State (ISIS), and categorically denies any collaboration with Damascus and regards the Syrian government as “oppressive.”
Haidar said he assured his Kurdish hosts in Rojava of the Syrian government’s support for talks about a range of issues, including the political status of Rojava “within Syria.”

Baath und IS

The death of the last major figure from Saddam Hussein’s regime still on the run, Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri - if confirmed - is a final twitch of the curtain falling on that era in Iraqi history. But his role after Saddam’s fall has been more significant. He led a hard core of loyalists to the defeated regime, who helped fuel and prolong the insurgency against its successors. (…)

Douri’s Naqshbandi Order is the main Baathist insurgent group. Despite its secular roots, it is believed to have played a key role in a major offensive by Islamic State last year.

Rebel forces in Damascus’ Qaboun neighbourhood have captured the self-proclaimed local ‘emir’ of Daesh (the ISIS) in Damascus, Munthir Salaf , along with 13 other members of the extremist militia.

It’s noteworthy that Assad’s forces and Daesh have singularly failed to fight one another in Damascus or anywhere else that they are useful to the regime’s objectives, with both largely restricting themselves to attacking rebel forces and civilians. The regime is known to be conducting oil and other business deals with Daesh in Raqqa and elsewhere.

Let’s be honest: how different, how vocal and passionate, would our reaction be if the people besieging Yarmouk were wearing the uniforms of the IDF?

Our selective outrage is morally unsustainable. Many of us who have raised our voices in support of the Palestinian cause have inexcusably turned a blind eye to the fact that tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed by fellow Arabs in recent decades: by the Jordanian military in the Black September conflicts of the early 1970s; by Lebanese militias in the civil war of the mid-1980s; by Kuwaiti vigilantes after the first Gulf war, in the early 1990s. Egypt, the so-called “heart of the Arab world”, has colluded with Israel in the latter’s eight-year blockade of Gaza.

Meanwhile, the Palestinians of Yarmouk are living in catastrophic conditions, their lives “profoundly threatened”, in the words of the United Nations.(…) Now is the time for those of us who claim to care about the Palestinian people, and their struggle for dignity, justice and nationhood, to make our voices heard. Some 3,500 of the 18,000 Palestinians in Yarmouk are children. As Gunness says, his voice trembling with emotion: “We are potentially witnessing a slaughter of the innocents. What is the world going to do?”

Fällt Ramadi an den IS?

‘Falih Essawi shouted on the phone as he described his situation. From his point of view, ISIS militants might be just hours away from taking the key Iraqi city of Ramadi.

Fierce fighting has engulfed Ramadi, which lies only about 70 miles (113 kilometers) west of Baghdad and is the capital of Anbar province, Iraq’s Sunni heartland.

Essawi, the deputy head of the Anbar Provincial Council, told CNN from inside the city Wednesday that it’s unclear how much longer government troops can hold their front lines against the ISIS offensive.

The politician said he was on a front line himself, armed with a machine gun. Security was “collapsing rapidly in the city,” and he begged the Iraqi government for reinforcements and the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS for air support. He stressed that urgent support from the military and security forces is needed to save the city.

“This is what we warned Baghdad of what’s going to happen,” Essawi told CNN by phone, referring to the Iraqi government at the capital. “Where is Baghdad? Where is al-Abadi?"‘

Iranian Revolutionary Guard troops fighting on behalf of the Bashar al-Assad regime have reportedly withdrawn from a number of battlefronts and redeployed to strategic points around the Syrian capital.

“The Iranian leadership has withdrawn [IRGC fighters] because there is no strategic advantage for their forces in many areas and they have suffered heavy losses,” Italian Adnkronos news agency (AKI) reported Tuesday.

“The IRGC has now based itself firmly [around] Damascus,” sources close to Hezbollah told AKI.
